The operator of a famous amusement ride at Munich Oktoberfest is giving away free cycling shorts to female visitors to protect their privacy. Elisabeth Polaczy, the 80-year-old operator of the Teufelsrad attraction, took action after thousands of voyeuristic videos appeared online. Millions of people have viewed these clips on social media platforms, with some uploaders earning thousands of euros from unauthorized content. The move highlights growing concerns over digital harassment and upskirting at major international festivals.

What Happened?

The Teufelsrad, or Devil's Wheel, is one of the oldest and most popular attractions at Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany. The ride features a large circular wooden platform that spins faster and faster until riders slide off. Many female visitors participate while wearing traditional Bavarian dirndl dresses. As the wheel accelerates and riders lose their balance, their skirts naturally lift up in front of crowds. Voyeurs and content creators have taken advantage of this action by filming women and posting the clips on platforms like YouTube and social media.

Investigations revealed that tens of thousands of these videos are currently circulating online, with some generating substantial profits. Reports indicate that a single video clip earned an uploader over 9,000 euros, while professional creator networks have exploited the attraction for content. In some extreme cases, images have been digitally altered using artificial intelligence to display victims without clothes. In response, Polaczy has handed out over 100 pairs of protective shorts this season alone, paying for them out of her own pocket to ensure riders feel safe and respected.

German authorities have tried to address the growing issue through legal enforcement and public awareness campaigns. Police in Munich have put up posters explicitly stating that upskirting is a serious criminal offense punishable by up to two years in prison. Officers have made several arrests at this year's festival, including a man caught filming under a woman's dress. Even festival waitresses have started wearing cycling shorts under their dresses to protect themselves while working in crowded beer tents.

Why Does This Matter?

This issue touches on major modern privacy concerns that affect ordinary people in public spaces. With smartphones and smart camera glasses becoming widespread, anyone can easily fall victim to unauthorized filming and digital exploitation. For women visiting public events or festivals, the risk of non-consensual recordings ending up online poses a severe threat to personal dignity and safety. The situation shows how traditional laws often struggle to keep up with rapid technology changes and social media monetization.

Furthermore, the ongoing problem highlights the importance of proactive measures by event operators and communities. Simple solutions, such as offering protective clothing, help visitors regain control over their personal safety when official enforcement falls short. As digital harassment continues to evolve, public awareness and stronger legal protections are essential to ensure that everyone can enjoy major cultural celebrations without fear of being targeted online.
