Iraq has officially kicked off a four-day national holiday to celebrate Sovereignty Day following the complete withdrawal of United States troops and international coalition forces. Nighttime celebrations spread across major cities as thousands of joyous citizens gathered in public squares to mark this historic moment. This significant milestone comes after more than a decade of international military presence focused on fighting the terror group ISIL and restoring security across the region. The final exit of foreign troops represents a dramatic and hopeful shift in the nation's political and security landscape.

What Happened?

For more than ten years, military coalition forces led by the United States maintained a strong physical presence in Iraq to combat ISIL. The military partnership involved extensive direct combat operations, specialized training programs, and strategic advising designed to rebuild the Iraqi national army. Over the years, as local military units grew stronger and ISIL lost its territorial grip, the necessity for active foreign military involvement gradually decreased.

The final departure of all international military personnel was successfully completed after months of careful planning and coordination between top Iraqi government officials and Western leaders. With the international combat mission officially coming to an end, full responsibility for maintaining domestic peace, stopping criminal activity, and defending national borders now rests entirely on Iraqi defense forces. Iraqi officials confirmed that all major military bases previously used by foreign troops have been fully transferred to local commanders.

Across the country, citizens reacted to the announcement with massive public gatherings, colorful fireworks displays, and lively traditional music. Families filled popular street markets, parks, and city centers throughout the night to proudly wave national flags and celebrate this landmark victory. The designated four-day official holiday allows people from every province to participate in local parades, cultural performances, and historical ceremonies honoring national resilience.
