The Delhi Police have officially registered a First Information Report against Congress Member of Parliament Angomcha Bimol Akoijam following serious allegations of sexual harassment at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi. The formal police case was initiated after a detailed complaint was filed by the university's Chief Security Officer at the Vasant Kunj North police station on Sunday. This legal development comes after multiple female students lodged formal complaints against the former university professor regarding inappropriate behavior and misconduct. Authorities have confirmed that a thorough investigation is currently underway to examine all aspects of the allegations against the prominent politician.

What Happened?

According to official reports, the registered FIR includes several severe legal provisions under the newly implemented Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The specific sections invoked in the case are Section 75, Section 75(1)(i), Section 75(1)(iv), and Section 79, which deal with various degrees of sexual harassment and outrageous acts against female modesty. The police complaint stems from a series of events that began earlier this year in May when at least 11 female students at Jawaharlal Nehru University submitted formal complaints against Akoijam. At the time of the alleged incidents, Akoijam was serving as a faculty member at the prestigious institution before he was recently dismissed from his academic position.

The complaints filed by the female students detailed systemic misconduct by the former professor over an extended period. According to the student statements, Akoijam allegedly invited female students to his on-campus residence under the false pretext of holding academic meetings or informal gatherings. Once the students were present at his residence, he reportedly attempted to subject them to unwanted physical advances and sexual harassment. Furthermore, several students alleged in their statements that the former professor routinely made obscene, inappropriate, and highly unprofessional remarks inside the classroom during regular lectures, creating an uncomfortable learning environment for young scholars.

Following the initial complaints, Jawaharlal Nehru University set up a formal inquiry through its Internal Committee under the Prevention of Sexual Harassment Act to investigate the matter thoroughly. Upon reviewing the evidence and hearing testimonies from the affected students, the university committee found the allegations serious enough to warrant his immediate termination from service. The recent FIR marks a significant escalation in the matter, shifting the case from an internal academic disciplinary proceeding to a formal criminal investigation managed by state law enforcement agencies.

Why Does This Matter?

This development is highly significant because it highlights the critical importance of safety and accountability within higher educational institutions across the country. When serious complaints are taken seriously by administration and law enforcement, it reinforces public trust in legal systems and institutional safety measures designed to protect young women.
