The State Election Commission has officially rescheduled the mayoral election in the historic city of Vizianagaram, Andhra Pradesh. Originally set for October 28, 2026, the local election will now take place on October 29, 2026. The decision comes following formal requests from district authorities who highlighted major administrative challenges caused by the annual Sirimanotsavam festival. The massive religious celebration, dedicated to Goddess Pydithalli Ammavaru, is scheduled for October 27 and requires full administrative and police attention.

What Happened?

District Collector S. Ramsundar Reddy and other local administrative officials approached the State Election Commission to request a brief delay in polling. They pointed out that the entire city administration would be completely occupied with managing the massive crowd, traffic control, and security during the Sirimanotsavam festival on October 27. Setting up polling booths and moving official election equipment to 229 locations across all 62 divisions on the festival day was practically impossible for the staff.

The State Election Commission carefully considered the administrative challenges and approved the one-day delay. Officials submitted background reports, including media coverage that highlighted the potential clash between the religious festival and election logistics, to justify the official request. By moving the local election to October 29, city authorities now have sufficient time to clear festival arrangements and properly prepare all polling stations for voters.

Despite the short local delay in voting, the rest of the state's urban elections will proceed as originally planned. Polling across 99 other urban local bodies in Andhra Pradesh will still take place on October 28. However, the final counting of votes for Vizianagaram will remain aligned with the rest of the state, taking place on October 30, 2026. A total of 2,23,050 registered voters in Vizianagaram will cast their ballots to choose their mayor and 62 division corporators.

Why Does This Matter?

This decision is very important for local citizens because it prevents public chaos and ensures smooth governance. The Sirimanotsavam festival brings tens of thousands of devotees from across Andhra Pradesh and neighboring states into the Fort City. Trying to manage huge festival crowds while simultaneously setting up security and equipment for an election on the exact same day would have created massive traffic jams, public inconvenience, and security risks.

By shifting the voting date by just one day, the government ensures that citizens can celebrate their traditional religious festival without any election-related disruption. It also gives polling staff adequate time to safely transfer voting materials and set up polling stations without stress. This simple administrative change guarantees that citizens can exercise their democratic right safely and peacefully while preserving the cultural importance of their local festival.
