The local body elections across four major mandals in the Eluru district of Andhra Pradesh have been postponed due to severe weather conditions caused by Cyclone Murasu. Originally scheduled for November 5, the Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency (ZPTC) and Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituency (MPTC) polling will now take place on November 6. Eluru District Collector K. Vetri Selvi announced the decision following heavy rainfall and widespread flooding across the region. Local authorities and emergency response teams have already initiated immediate evacuation operations to move residents in vulnerable habitations to safe shelters.

What Happened?

The heavy rainfall triggered by Cyclone Murasu has severely disrupted daily life and infrastructure across the Eluru district. Mandals such as Velerupadu, Buttaigudem, Jeelugumilli, and Polavaram have experienced intense downpours, leading to waterlogging and swelling of local rivers and streams. In particular, the Peddavaagu stream in Velerupadu mandal is overflowing, posing a direct threat to surrounding villages and rendering several roads completely impassable for voters and polling officials.

In response to the escalating situation, Eluru District Collector K. Vetri Selvi directed administration and security officials to take immediate relief measures. Police and disaster management personnel quickly launched evacuation drives in several affected habitations, including Koya Madhavaram, Kummarigudem, Medipally, and Allurinagar. Local authorities are actively transferring residents from low-lying areas to safer relief centers to prevent casualties and ensure public safety during the storm.

The decision to delay the ZPTC and MPTC elections by one day was taken to safeguard both citizens and election personnel. Setting up polling booths, transporting Electronic Voting Machines, and ensuring safe movement for voters became extremely hazardous due to flooded roads and continuous rainfall. The administration emphasized that political processes must prioritize citizen safety during natural calamities, and the extra day will allow authorities to clear key pathways and secure polling locations.

Why Does This Matter?

Ensuring safety during local elections is vital for protecting democratic participation and preserving public welfare. When natural disasters like cyclones strike, holding elections without proper precautions can put thousands of voters, government employees, and security personnel at extreme risk. By postponing the voting process by twenty-four hours, local officials are giving priority to human lives and ensuring that voters can exercise their constitutional rights without risking their safety in floodwaters.

This situation highlights the growing challenges local governments face when managing public events alongside extreme weather events. Strong administrative coordination, swift evacuation protocols, and flexible scheduling are essential tools for disaster management. For citizens in rural areas, responsive governance during environmental emergencies helps build trust in public institutions while ensuring that critical local elections can proceed smoothly once danger passes.
