Srinagar Member of Parliament Aga Syed Ruhullah is stepping down from his Lok Sabha seat and resigning from the National Conference. The senior politician announced his decision on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, marking a major rift within the ruling party of Jammu and Kashmir. Ruhullah has publicly rebelled against party leadership and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah over core ideological differences. This dramatic political development has stirred significant debate and mixed reactions across the region.

What Happened?

Aga Syed Ruhullah, a prominent 48-year-old Shia cleric from Budgam, has emerged as a strong political voice in Jammu and Kashmir in recent years. His differences with the National Conference leadership deepened after the Central government revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir in August 2019. Ruhullah repeatedly accused Chief Minister Omar Abdullah of abandoning the core principles of the party and taking a soft stance on crucial regional issues. He expressed his disappointment with the leadership's recent political direction, claiming that the party had drifted away from its original mission to protect the rights of the local population.

The announcement coincides with the 26th death anniversary of his father, Shaheed Aga Syed Mehdi, who was a respected leader assassinated in a landmine blast in 2000. Ruhullah shared a heartfelt message on social media paying tribute to his father's courage and principles, which he described as his guiding light. On the eve of his major announcement, he posted that a new political journey would begin after serving the people of Jammu and Kashmir for nearly three years. Public posters appeared across Budgam describing Ruhullah as the "Voice of the Voiceless" and calling on local residents to join his gathering.

Local authorities granted permission for a memorial service at Behishti Zehra Park in Budgam between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. However, officials placed strict conditions on the event, prohibiting rallies, processions, or any unauthorized material. Despite these restrictions, the announcement has created widespread interest, as supporters eager to hear his next political steps closely monitor his actions. In the previous parliamentary elections, Ruhullah won the Srinagar seat by a massive margin of over 1.88 lakh votes against his opponent from the Peoples Democratic Party.

Why Does This Matter?

This political shift is crucial for the public because it signals significant instability within the governing party of Jammu and Kashmir. When a major leader like Aga Syed Ruhullah leaves a political party, it affects how local issues and citizens' rights are represented in the national parliament. Many residents viewed Ruhullah as a strong voice who consistently raised concerns about autonomy and regional identity. His departure creates uncertainty about who will represent these important issues for the people of Srinagar and surrounding areas.

Furthermore, this development could reshape the broader political landscape in Jammu and Kashmir. As new political realignments take shape, citizens will watch closely to see if a new political platform emerges to challenge existing regional parties. For ordinary people, changes in leadership directly impact local governance, community representation, and political stability. Understanding these shifts helps voters make informed choices about who best protects their rights and reflects their values in the future.
