Popular Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan has officially started shooting for his next big film project, an untitled period drama. The film is directed by acclaimed filmmaker Ritesh Batra, who earned worldwide fame for directing the hit movie The Lunchbox. Although specific details about the plot, cast, and release date remain secret, the announcement has created great excitement among film enthusiasts. This new collaboration marks the very first time Saif Ali Khan is working under Ritesh Batra's direction.

What Happened?

Filming for the upcoming period drama has officially commenced, marking an exciting new chapter for both Saif Ali Khan and director Ritesh Batra. Batra is widely recognized in Indian and international cinema for his subtle storytelling style. He made his directorial debut in 2013 with The Lunchbox, which starred Irrfan Khan, Nimrat Kaur, and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. That film won global critical acclaim and multiple awards, establishing Batra as a talent to watch. He later directed notable international projects such as The Sense of an Ending, Photograph, and Our Souls at Night starring Robert Redford and Jane Fonda.

Saif Ali Khan is well known for choosing unconventional and challenging roles throughout his acting career. Over the years, he has continuously experimented across diverse genres instead of sticking to simple commercial roles. Some of his most memorable experiments include the hit web series Sacred Games, the dark comedy Being Cyrus, and the gritty period drama Laal Kaptaan. Partnering with a director like Batra fits perfectly into Saif's habit of taking on unique character-driven stories.

This announcement comes shortly after Saif's recent appearance in the crime thriller movie Haiwaan, directed by Priyadarshan. In that film, Saif starred alongside Akshay Kumar, playing a blind martial artist trying to protect a young girl from a dangerous killer. While Haiwaan received mixed reviews from critics and had a quiet run at the box office collecting around 9.85 crore in its first week, Saif is moving forward with an impressive slate of projects in 2026, including Kartavya and this new period drama.
