State-owned power producer NTPC is setting up a major green hydrogen hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, to boost India's renewable energy sector. Speaking at the 20th India Energy Summit in New Delhi, NTPC Chairman and Managing Director Gurdeep Singh revealed that the company is actively in talks with foreign buyers in South Korea, Germany, and Japan. The ambitious project marks a significant step forward in shifting from experimental clean energy projects to commercial-scale green fuel production. This development aligns with India's broader vision of becoming a global hub for green hydrogen manufacturing and exports.

What Happened?

NTPC plans to produce clean fuel alternatives, specifically green ammonia and green methanol, at the new facility in Visakhapatnam. To support this production process, the company is building a 20-kilometer pipeline to source carbon dioxide directly from its nearby Simhadri power station. By capturing carbon dioxide and combining it with green hydrogen, NTPC intends to manufacture lower-carbon compounds that can replace traditional fossil fuels in various industrial sectors.

During his address at the event organized by the Indian Chamber of Commerce, Gurdeep Singh emphasized the necessity of expanding commercial demand for these alternative fuels. He noted that for the green hydrogen sector to thrive, projects must quickly transition from small-scale pilot programs into dependable, high-volume market solutions. Securing long-term purchase agreements with international partners like Germany, Japan, and South Korea will provide the necessary financial foundation to make green hydrogen economically viable.

As India works toward its net-zero emission targets, large state-backed enterprises are leading the charge in renewable energy investments. NTPC's strategic move into green chemical production will help diversify its existing energy portfolio while positioning the country as an essential player in the global green supply chain. The company hopes that these carbon-reduction technologies will eventually evolve into a highly profitable, self-sustaining business model.

Why Does This Matter?

Transitioning to green hydrogen and clean fuels is vital for reducing harmful emissions and fighting global climate change. By capturing carbon dioxide from existing power plants and transforming it into useful energy, projects like this help lower air pollution and slow down environmental damage. For everyday citizens, cleaner industrial processes mean healthier air quality, a safer environment, and reduced dependency on costly imported fossil fuels.

Furthermore, developing large-scale green energy hubs creates thousands of skilled jobs, stimulates local economic growth, and attracts international investments into the country. As green fuel technology matures and becomes more affordable, consumers will eventually benefit from cheaper, cleaner energy and more sustainable everyday products. This major step by NTPC brings India closer to a self-reliant and environmentally friendly energy future.
