Scholars and cultural enthusiasts recently gathered in New Delhi to honor the enduring legacy of Kazi Nazrul Islam, Bengal's celebrated rebel poet. The event was organized at the India International Centre ahead of his death anniversary on August 29. The insightful discussion highlighted Nazrul's remarkable contribution to India's pluralism and unity through his rich literary works. Participants emphasized the urgent need to remember his message of harmony in modern times.

What Happened?

The special discussion was organized by political scientist and author Mujibur Rahman after he noticed Nazrul's name was missing from a prominent panel discussion on Bengal's multiculturalism in Kolkata. Nazrul Islam, affectionately called 'Bidrohi Kobi' or the rebel poet, played a crucial role in shaping modern Bengali literature and music. Despite his massive contributions, experts feel his legacy is slowly fading from public memory today, making such literary gatherings essential.

Born in 1899, Nazrul was part of the renowned 'Pentagon of Poets' alongside Bengali icons like Rabindranath Tagore, who lovingly called him 'Dhumketu' or the comet. His brilliant creative journey was tragically cut short in 1942 at the young age of 42 due to a severe neurological disorder. During his active creative years, Nazrul composed over 3,000 songs spanning various musical genres, including Indian classical music, Persian-influenced ghazals, and powerful patriotic tracks.

Nazrul was truly unique because he found divine inspiration across all religious faiths. He wrote deeply moving Islamic devotional songs as well as vibrant kirtans for Hindu goddesses Kali and Durga. During the festive season of Durga Puja, his famous 'Agomoni' songs are still widely performed across Bengal. These songs welcome Goddess Durga into human homes while inspiring people to defeat internal demons like hatred, falsehood, and religious dogma.
