Mumbai Indians are preparing for a massive leadership change as legendary cricketer Rohit Sharma is expected to return as captain for IPL 2027. The strategic decision comes after three disappointing seasons under Hardik Pandya, during which the five-time champion franchise struggled to find consistency and qualified for the playoffs only once. According to recent reports, the team management reached out to Rohit before his departure for New Zealand, and the veteran star has agreed to reclaim the responsibility. This major move is part of a complete restructuring aimed at restoring the franchise to its former glory.

What Happened?

The decision to bring back Rohit Sharma follows a period of frustration and mixed results for the Mumbai Indians. Hardik Pandya was brought in from Gujarat Titans ahead of the 2024 season in a high-profile move to lead the franchise into a new era. However, his tenure as captain failed to deliver the expected success, prompting the management to rethink their long-term direction. The franchise is now not only looking to replace Pandya as captain but is also open to trading him to another team through an official trade arrangement ahead of the upcoming season.

Before finalizing the decision, the management evaluated several leadership candidates within the squad, including star batter Suryakumar Yadav, pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, and promising youngster Tilak Varma. In fact, Rohit Sharma initially suggested that young Tilak Varma should be groomed for the future captaincy role. However, the management insisted that Rohit take charge himself to bring immediate stability and tactical guidance back to the dressing room. Rohit agreed after detailed discussions and was even consulted during the process of hiring new coaches for the team.

As part of this major organizational shift, Mumbai Indians also announced a completely revamped coaching setup. Franchise legend Kieron Pollard has been named the new head coach, taking over from Mahela Jayawardene. Former Indian batsman Robin Uthappa will handle batting duties, while former New Zealand bowler Mitchell McClenaghan steps in as the new bowling coach. Additionally, T Dilip joins as fielding coach and Dhawal Kulkarni takes charge as development bowling coach to nurture young talent.
